Verstappen beats Norris to a chaotic Canadian gp!!
An unbelievable, action-packed race ended with a very usual result. Verstappen first, Norris second, a 1-2 we are gradually getting used to in the 2024 Formula One season. George Russell completed the podium, beating Lewis Hamilton to earn Mercedes’ first podium of the season. Could this be a turnaround for the silver arrows?
Best Driver: Max Verstappen
Even when chaos in a race is occurring, as well as a track which doesn’t suit his RB20, Verstappen won in emphatic fashion. Yes, the safety car benefitted him massively, reducing a 13 second gap behind Norris and then overtaking him. What cost him in Miami, benefitted him in Montreal. Only a dead heat stopped him being on pole. Overall, an impressive weekend from the champ.
Worst Driver: Sergio Perez
Q1 exit, 1st lap damage, back to back DNF’s, a 3 place penalty for the next race, I don’t think Sergio Perez’s Canadian GP could’ve physically gone worse. One teammate best, the other worst. It seems to be a recurring theme to Perez dropping off a cliff as soon as a contract extension is announced. Suspicious…
Surprise of the weekend: Mercedes
It was confirmed in Monaco that Mercedes’ new front wing was working well, but no one was expecting this gain in performance. A Russell podium and a “self-proclaimed” poor performance P4 for Hamilton rounded up Mercedes’ best weekend so far. Can they bring this form to Barcelona next time out.
Flop of the weekend: Ferrari
Does this need to be explained? They’ve already bottled their title fight. Ferrari were absolutely terrible all weekend. A double dnf, an engine issue for Leclerc, along with a strategy blunder causing him to be lapped, as well as a mistake from Sainz rounded up Ferrari’s worst weekend of the season so far. What is even more worrying is they have no idea why the performance was so bad. Will they solve this issues in time for Sainz’s home race?
Individual driver reviews will follow in the next blog, as well as a race rating, but Montreal truly was the best race so far.
